Are online IQ tests reliable?
Short answer: an online test can be good practice and a fun snapshot of your reasoning, but it does not replace an IQ test given by a professional.
Clinical vs online tests
Clinical intelligence tests are given by psychologists, under controlled conditions, with standardised instruments compared against large population samples. That is what makes an IQ number meaningful.
An online test has none of that control: environment, time, tiredness and familiarity with the question types vary a lot. So an "IQ" number from a website deserves scepticism.
So what is it good for?
A good recreational test helps you:
- Practise logic, patterns and spatial reasoning.
- Notice which kinds of question you do better or worse on.
- Track your progress by retaking with new questions.
How the Reasoning Challenge handles it
We do not give an IQ number. We show your score, your performance per area and a review with explanations, and we are clear that the test is recreational and educational.
